POSITION IDENTIFICATION
Technical Director at EKP Ltd doing business as Great Northern Way Scene Shop (GNW).
POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for technical direction on specified projects and supporting Project Managers in project and client management.
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
Elia Kirby Productions Ltd (EKP Ltd), dba the Great Northern Way Scene Shop (GNW) operates year-round and provides production services and scenic fabrication for industrial and cultural projects. GNW works on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ / sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations. GNW’s client base spans cultural institutions (e.g. Vancouver Art Gallery) and small not-for-profits (e.g. Pacific Theatre, Theatre Replacement, Green Thumb Theatre) to corporate entities (e.g. TED Talks, Lululemon) and municipalities (e.g. Cities of Vancouver, Surrey, Quesnel). Located at the western edge of the False Creek Flats and within the Arts Factory building, GNW is dedicated to supporting Metro Vancouver’s cultural community while providing employment to local artisans and craftspeople.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
Reports directly to the Senior Technical Director, to the Director of Production, and to the Director of Projects; takes direction from Project Managers; also collaborates with Department Heads (e.g., Head Scenic Carpenter, Head Scenic Painter, Head Scenic Fabricator).
WORK PERFORMED
Researches appropriate materials and methodologies, plans, supervises, and ensures the delivery of contracted client projects within agreed-upon budgets and schedules. Duties include but are not limited to:
Assists in analyzing designs and/or projects in preparation for construction to fit within approved budgets and schedules; prepares drawings for the purposes of construction and/or installation of designs and/or projects, as well as renderings when required
Provides technical expertise on our various industry portfolios, including but not limited to live performance, corporate events/buildouts, on film and television sets, museums, galleries, retail build outs, public art, and more.
Supports communications of the construction, material selection, and methodology, with Project Managers and between all relevant personnel
Researches and identifies required materials related to the manufacturing of specified projects in cooperation with the Project Manager, as well as Project Coordinators, as needed
Assists the PMs, Project Leads in providing oversight of specified projects
Assists with liasoning of outside contractors and suppliers as required to complete the build and or installation of client designs and/or projects at GNW or outside locations
Assists the PM, Project Leads and Department Heads by providing technical oversight during the planning, fabrication, installation and deinstallation as required.
Installs and/or supervises the installation of the completed design and/or project at the off-site location as requested by the Project Manager and client, and as approved by the Director of Production; supervises other personnel when required
Prepares final reports and invoices on project, including but not limited to: project personnel, material inventory, and rental equipment used on designs and/or projects
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Senior Technical Director, the Director of Production, and the Director of Projects. Takes direction from Department Heads (e.g., Head Scenic Carpenter, Head Scenic Painter, Head Scenic Fabricator). May occasionally work unsupervised.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
May be required to oversee fabrication and other production staff for short periods of time on particular tasks, although will not be a direct supervisor.
EXERCISING JUDGEMENT/IMPACT OF DECISIONS
Incumbent is responsible, in collaboration with Project Managers and attendant teams, for the smooth and safe production practices at the Scene Shop and at off-site locations. The consequences of errors include, but are not limited to: EKP Ltd and the client projects could run at a serious resource and financial deficit, and the staff and production personnel may be seriously injured in unsafe working conditions, seriously compromising the organization’s ability to operate.
WORKING CONDITIONS
GNW is currently located at 281 Industrial Ave, Vancouver BC. Off-site work mainly takes place at various locations throughout the Metro Vancouver area. Working conditions include working at heights on scaffolding and/or on a ladder, and/or in a high-reach (aerial lift); fumes or airborne particles requiring the use of a respirator; working with or around paint/solvents/aerosols (e.g. spray paints); using a motorized company vehicle or a leased or personal vehicle for company business. Working in non-weather conditions that may be wet, or humid, in extreme cold or heat; working with or near compressed gas cylinders or tanks; working with or near toxic or caustic chemicals, hazardous chemicals, fluorescent lamps or batteries. Exposure to loud noise levels. Outdoor weather conditions include direct sunlight, wind and rain.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school graduation with a minimum of 5 years professional experience in the field of theatre, event, and entertainment production
Working knowledge of Rhino, Vectorworks, and/or other modelling software required
Knowledge of production and employment standards, best practices in the entertainment industry, and procedures relating to those standards and practices; and Current understanding and knowledge of safety practices in the entertainment field
Effective facilitator with strong interpersonal, decision-making, and organizational skills
Ability to lead and work effectively in a collaborative environment
Ability to perform well under pressure and adapt to a fast-changing environment
Good working knowledge of MS Office and Google Workplace
Knowledge of building materials and material procurement is an asset
Professional experience as a Technical Director, Production Manager, Scenic Designer, Scenic Painter or Scenic/Construction Carpenter is an asset
Knowledge of stage carpentry and rigging is an asset
Knowledge of CNC operation is an asset
Knowledge or experience working with hand tools, especially routers, is an asset
EMPLOYMENT TERMS & REMUNERATION
This is a permanent full-time position, at 40 hours per week. Hours are typically Monday through Friday; however, some evening and weekend hours are required, based on project needs. Wage is $31.00/hour, plus the opportunity to enroll in our group benefits plan after a successful three-month probationary period.
