POSITION IDENTIFICATION
Driver at Elia Kirby Productions Ltd (EKP Ltd) doing business as Great Northern Way Scene Shop (GNW).
POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for driving materials, constructed projects, and other items for transport to delivery locations, as well as assisting with installations and strikes.
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
GNW provides production services and scenic fabrication for cultural and corporate projects. GNW works on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ/sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations. GNW is dedicated to supporting Metro Vancouver’s cultural community while providing employment to local artisans and craftspeople.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
Reports to the Operations Manager and the Crewing & Logistics Coordinator. Works in collaboration with the project-management teams, heads of departments, lead positions, and general labourers.
WORK PERFORMED
The driver serves the transport needs of the company, as well as provides assistance with installations, strikes, and physical-plant duties, as required:
-Drives vehicles to deliver, pick-up, and return in a safe and timely manner: constructed projects, materials, and client items for transport service
-Obeys all provincial driving regulations as well as company transport and delivery policies and procedures
-Loads and unloads vehicles in a safe and efficient manner to ensure that all transported items arrive in top condition
-Provides excellent client service and builds relationships with vendors and venue managers
-Participates in transport-department operations by upholding standards, by following vehicle maintenance and repair schedules, by maintaining transport records, and by communicating effectively with designated staff
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position works under the supervision of the Operations Manager and reports to the Director of Operations and Project Managers. Works unsupervised when driving company or rental vehicles and completing tasks based on assigned deadlines.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
This position may occasionally oversee tasks performed by general labourers/grips and other company drivers.
EXERCISING JUDGEMENT/IMPACT OF DECISIONS
Incumbent is responsible for the smooth and safe production practices while operating company and rental vehicles at the main as well as off-site locations. The consequences of errors include: EKP Ltd and client projects could run at a serious resource and financial deficit, and the staff and production personnel may be seriously injured in unsafe working conditions, seriously compromising the organization’s ability to operate.
WORKING CONDITIONS
GNW is currently located at 281 Industrial Ave, Vancouver, British Columbia. Off-site work takes place at various locations throughout the Metro Vancouver area, and sometimes further afield (e.g. Whistler and Kamloops), and possibly into the United States of America.
Working conditions may include, but are not limited to: working at heights on scaffolding and/or on a ladder, and/or in a high-reach (aerial lift); fumes or airborne particles requiring the use of a respirator; working with or around paint/solvents/aerosols (e.g. spray paints); working in non-weather conditions that may be wet, or humid, in extreme cold or heat; working with or near compressed gas cylinders or tanks; working with or near toxic or caustic chemicals, hazardous chemicals, fluorescent lamps or batteries; exposure to loud noise levels. Outdoor weather conditions include direct sunlight, wind, and rain.
QUALIFICATIONS
-High school graduation with a minimum of 2-years professional experience in the fields of technical theatre, production services, event logistics, and/or delivery services
-Class 5 drivers license required and a clean driver’s abstract from ICBC
-Proven experience driving 1- and 5-tonne trucks
-Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs/22 kg and effectively use handtrucks, pallet jacks, carts, and other safe methods of moving items
-Knowledge of production and safety practices in the entertainment industry
-Effective interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to understand and follow directions
-Strong customer service skills are required in maintaining and building relationships with clients, vendors, and venue managers
-Some experience with basic vehicle maintenance tasks, including working with a mechanic to keep vehicles in working order
-Experience keeping accurate transport records is an asset
-Knowledge of building materials and local vendors is an asset
-Able to use Google Workplace tools to track transport schedules and needs
-Able to work well on a deadline in a fast-changing environment
REMUNERATION
This is a casual part-time position. Regular shop hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, but this position more supports evening and weekend work, based on project needs. Hourly wage range is $27.00–$37.50.
